This story shows how one young boy overcomes his fears of the unknown. One always speculates what the first day of school will be like, how much fun it will be, but in Wohali's case he worries that going to a public school will change who he is and what he is. Wohali is a proud Cherokee Indian and he doesn't want to loose his heritage just because he has to go to school. His life has already changed when he finds out that he can no longer wear his indian head band, or his moccasins, not to mention that he also has to wear regular pants and shirts like the other kids so that he will not stand out.
Wohali lives with his grandfather who has taught him everything he knows of his Cherokee pride and heritage.
This book has authentic Cherokee language in the dialogue. A fun way to learn to speak like a true Indian.
