Grace for the Race pictures motherhood as an Olympic event. You vault out of bed in the morning. Leap over the hurdles of the day. Hustle through the bath-and-bedtime relay. Sprint to the finish line—and collapse in a heap on the living room sofa. Fortunately, there is expert coaching available from the One who created mothering. In Grace for the Race, Dena makes observations about everyday family life, and then offers relevant, Scriptural encouragement. Topics include understanding our weaknesses, accepting God’s care for us, dealing with unrealistic expectations, celebrating the gift of families, and much more.

Grace for the Race: Meditations for Busy Moms

Dena Dyer

Mothers looking for hope in their lives will be enlightened and encouraged by Grace for the Race. This series of devotions (geared toward different stages in the life of a woman and mother) will uplift readers in many ways. Each devotion starts with a quote, has a short essay, and then ends with 'Notes from the Coach,' which are Bible verses that apply to the reading.

Nine sections divide a mother's life into stages. 'Training Well' relates different things the author has learned about parenting. 'Warming Up' and 'Stretching Out' are about accepting our own weaknesses and those of our children. 'The First Lap' is all about those first few years of parenting. 'Using Proper Equipment' focuses on prayer, friends, humor, the church, and other things which can be our greatest weapons against discouragement. In 'Hopping Over the Hurdles', Dyer focuses on obstacles to growing and becoming a godly woman. 'Handing It Off' talks about reaching out to others and enduring difficult times. 'In the Final Stretch' shows how God can help us reach into our reserves if we need to. 'Crossing the Finish Line' helps us learn to share our faith. Finally, 'On the Podium' talks about the gifts we receive.

Each section imparts wisdom, humor, and just the right amount of encouragement for moms who are burned out, busy, and needing a pick-me-up. God's Word sprinkled throughout the readings gives added emphasis to God's ideal for our lives. For moms (including myself) who struggle with perfectionism and busyness, Dena Dyer's transparency is refreshing. The readings are the perfect length for moms to fit into the small bits of time available in their days. Grace for the Race would make an excellent gift for any mom in your life. Reader Responses

I ordered your book off of Amazon as soon as it was available (and an autographed copy at that, thanks) and finished it within two days, crying at several points, particularly during Peter's story. It was wonderful to see so many familiar places and ideas. Breaking into the cafeteria was something we were still doing my senoir year. It was a touching story, written rather beautifully. Thank you.

My name is Katie and I'm a senior at NCSSM.  I read your book this past extended and I absolutely loved it. I just wanted to convey the enjoyment that I received in reading your book and express my thanks for writing it. A Matter of Faith had just been added to my Top Ten. I really feel that the essence of our school was extremely well portrayed and in such a manner as only an alumni could. It was truly a fantastic novel. Thank you.

Brian Morin is a gifted, serious young Southern writer with much to say to people everywhere and of all ages.  A Matter of Faith is splendidly written and compellingly told.

My first reaction in reading A Matter of Faith was that I hoped the current students at NCSSM don’t get their hands on this book!  After all, they might get ideas of how to pick locks, how to raid the cafeteria in the dead of night, and how to have secret romantic liaisons in hidden places on campus.  But on further reading and contemplation, I have decided to applaud Brian Morin’s effort to honestly explore the concept of growing up with all the pitfalls, tragedies, and personal triumphs involved.  Morin bravely records a gripping story that is made intellectually challenging, yet enjoyable, as multiple characters explore issues of friendship, love, loyalty, childhood, adulthood, and parenthood.  I urge you to take these issues raised in this book to heart in your own life and work to make this world a better place.
